Council car parks to stay free

Car parking in North Lanarkshire’s town centres will remain free of charge following a decision taken at yesterday’s (Tuesday 24 January) Environmental Services Committee.

The council had been consulting on proposals to introduce charges as part of a wider parking management policy. The consultation exercise was carried out last year to gauge the views of residents and businesses.

“Since we put forward the proposal on car parking charges, there have been a number of developments which have influenced our decision,” Council Leader Councillor Jim McCabe explains

Cllr Jim McCabe

“Firstly our excellent work with SPT has increased car parking provision at stations in Croy, Coatbridge and Bellshill with discussions ongoing for increased provision in Shotts and Motherwell. This is allied to our efforts in conjunction with NHS Lanarkshire to improve parking provision in Airdrie.

Secondly there has been a 26% reduction in the capital grant the council receives from the Scottish Government.

“These factors combined mean that the council has decided to prioritise other key local services, and we have decided not to introduce charges during the current budget settlement from the Scottish Government which runs until March 2015.

“I have no doubt this is a positive decision for the people and businesses of North Lanarkshire.”

This decision will be considered as part of the process of agreeing its multi-million pound revenue budget for 2012/13.
