Dragons’ Lair test for young entrepreneurs |
|
They deliberated, developed . . . and dared to enter the Dragons’ Lair.
And for the three-strong team of pupils from Bellshill Academy, determination has paid off.
Their idea for an eco-friendly cordless lawnmower and trimmer, Grassias, has scooped the top prize in North Lanarkshire’s Entrepreneur Initiative, developed jointly by North Lanarkshire Council and Business Gateway.
The business-minded youngsters, Dillon McPherson Stacey Marshall and Sarah Cowie, fought off fierce competition from five other schools teams and contestants and will collect their prizes of Sony Vaio laptops and printers plus £1000 for their school.
Runner-up Marina Rolink from St Margaret’s High School, Airdrie, developed an innovative musical instrument storage system which has won her an Amazon Kindle with third-placed team from Abronhill High school in Cumbernauld - Ross McPherson, Ross Sefton and Jonathon Booth - Keasy door unlock accessory designed to assist the visually impaired won them each a £50 Amazon voucher. |

Cllr Jim Logue |
|
North Lanarkshire Council convener of Learning and Leisure Jim Logue said: “Choosing a winning project was very difficult, given the high standard of entries.
“What the competition made very clear is that North Lanarkshire has a wealth of talented youngsters who are both business-minded and inventive.
“The challenge is to harness and focus that energy and enthusiasm
And North Lanarkshire council vice convener of Regeneration Danny Carrigan said: “The level of innovation was impressive. There is no doubt in my mind that the young people of North Lanarkshire are more than capable of developing sound business ideas for the future which can only be of benefit to the community as a whole |
|
The S4 to S6 pupils had to develop their own business idea and present it to a team of judges from local businesses.
And they were treated to a special ‘motivational’ exercise conducted by renowned motivational expert Jack Black, Mindstore, who is originally from Cumbernauld.
Mr Black said:
“The great thing about dealing with young adults is they are not set in their ways. They bring freshness to their ideas and undoubtedly expect to succeed.
“Being involved with the Entrepreneur Initiative is a real pleasure.”
